How To Use Feng Shui In Your Home Office

12/08/2015 By The Drifting Desk Leave a Comment

Do you struggle separating your work life from your home life in your home office? When I started working from home, I was ecstatic. But when reality sunk in, I realized working from home was a lot harder than I had expected. So, I spent some time researching tips on how to use Feng Shui in your home office and how we, as work from home people, can better connect ourselves to our home working environment. Follow these tested Feng Shui tips to realign the energetic flow of chi throughout your home office:

1) Don’t face a wall

Using the Feng Shui ‘commanding’ position, face your desk outward, if possible. If you can’t do that (like me! I have a built-in office nook) try and disguise the wall with happy, vibrant art. I made a shadowbox of my going-away cards from my desk job. I’ve also got a calendar of tropical, warm beaches that inspire me. The goal is to take the wall that is blocking your flow of energy and turn it into a wall of inspiration. Easy-peasy!

2) Don’t keep it cluttered

Set aside time every day or every week to de-clutter your office space. Putting things back in their place after using them helps restore proper energy and keep the flow balanced. This is a solid rule for any theory of organization and decoration, and once you’re used to doing it all the time, you barely notice you’re putting in effort to organize anymore.

3) Put your office as far away from your bedroom as possible

Separating your home and work life goes both ways – you have to put in effort to keep work away from your home life as well as your home life apart from your work. I’ve always been strict on not allowing a TV in the bedroom since I’ve struggled with acute insomnia here and there, so this makes complete sense to me. The energy of your electronics and your busy work area is a no-no for restful chi in the bedroom.

We’ve seen the signs office jobs are dying, so now more than ever, it’s important to learn how to set up the flow of our home office to be conducive to a productive home working environment. And don’t forget how important it is to set boundaries with your friends and family when you work your own schedule.
