The Single Biggest Mistake Your Brand Is Making On Social Media
Social media is probably the predominant way that your business, brand or blog is communicating information to the public. That being said- Social media can be daunting. It can be exhausting. Navigating the waters of all of your different social media accounts and addressing your audience on each network is overwhelming. But there is one single biggest mistake your brand is making on social media and I see it again and again. And lucky, it’s really simple to fix.
It’s your grammar.
Spell things correctly. Use proper punctuation. Even if you have a casual, laid-back blog/business/audience.
Typos are one thing. I have them on my blog, no doubt. I usually proofread a piece right before I publish it (or task a member of my family with the job ;)), but they happen. This is absolutely not what I mean when I say that the single biggest mistake your brand is making on social media is using poor grammar.
Here is why:
You do not want to appear unprofessional
Your audience craves your content, and for good reason. When they follow you on social media, it’s their invitation to learn more about your brand via reading what you write. It’s the main method you use to communicate to your customers and readers. This means it is absolutely vital to take social media, and especially what you write on it, incredibly seriously! Be clear and be concise. Don’t make your writing hard to read for your readers. Paint your business in a good light.
You want to create trust in your brand
Consumers, readers and customers are not stupid. And if you repeatedly show them that you can’t form a simple sentence, you may be perceived in exactly that way. Even if the only content they ever see is on your social media, your audience is going to perceive you as intelligent if you take the time to write correctly. This is important to establish trust as a brand, regardless of the kind of business you conduct. We know that respect and trust is key to building a brand, especially online.
It’s permanent
Even though it’s possible to remove or edit a bad post, remember that a really bad post can come back to haunt you. If you say something with ridiculous spelling errors, someone may see it and save it. It’s important to remember this rule of social media: what you say as a brand is semi-permanent, so approach all posts with caution.
It’s your brand’s identity
Even though it’s your brand’s online identity and not a physical one – that’s still your identity. Whenever I hear about a blog, business, or brand, the first thing I do is find their online presence, and characterize them by the content I find. That is the era we are living in.
I’ll say it again – in most cases, the single biggest mistake your brand is making on social media is having poor grammar. Review how you’re making your posts – are you taking the time to stop and do a quick spell check? Are you using correct punctuation? Don’t forget that having a slew of incorrectly spelled words on any of your social media pages can absolutely kill your brand.
