What is Coworking?

Have you seen the term coworking lately? You’re about to see it a lot more. And it definitely something we talk about and advocate for here at The Drifting Desk. So I’ve piqued your interest – What is coworking, you ask?

kōˈwərkiNG

noun

Coworking is a style of workplace where self-employed and/or remote employees gather to share ideas, a space, and network. (My own definition). You’re technically at an office, but you’ll be seeing different ‘coworkers’ constantly and you can change the location of the office whenever you want by finding a new coworking space. And it’s a fantastic idea (I’m looking at you work from home folks! Seriously, You Should Be Coworking Instead of Working from Home!)

The history of coworking is REALLY cool – and it goes back a hundreds of years, which is a long time for a concept that is generally considered new. Writers and artists would gather in community spots to work together and network. But now, we finally have a name for it. Which is seriously awesome.

Next time you’re downtown in your city, start peeking around at different office setups in the parts of town that have that start-uppy vibe. Chances are, there’s a coworking office space not too far from you. Especially if you live in one of the Best Cities in the World for Coworking.

As humans continue to evolve, and the way we work evolves along with it, we will always be looking for innovative ways to connect more deeply with our work and the people around us, and that’s one of the many reasons why coworking is a permanent concept instead of a fad. Oh – and the jury’s still out on if it should be written as coworking, co-working, or Coworking.

So now that you know what coworking is, why not go try a coworking space yourself? And when you do, comment below and let us know all about it!

Ready to get serious about your work from anywhere job search? I whole-heartedly recommend Flexjobs, the site where I found my first freelance writing gig. There are zero scams on their site and they have their own 100% remote team, too!
