If you know someone who is a digital nomad and works from their computer, they’ve probably already told you this- Work from anywhere jobs are incredible. More and more people are finding ways to be location independent. There are so many reasons why remote careers rock, but I rounded up my personal favorites:
Ditch your daily commute
The average American’s commute is 50+ minutes per day. Gas, car registration fees and insurance are expensive. Public transportation can be exhausting. Pollution is a great tragedy. Road rage is a real, tangible thing. (Check out my 5 Tips to Survive your Work Commute). When you work from anywhere, all of these things that come along with your work commute go away for you.
There’s potential for a higher salary
For example, Software Developers who work remotely full-time earn about 40% more than those who don’t.
You could end up working for an awesome company
When you’re looking for a job that lets you work from anywhere, it’s guaranteed your search is going to turn up some of the way cool, trendsetting startups that operate their businesses with an 100% virtual workforce. Some of these companies have no actual physical presence in any city, so unless you work remotely, you’ll never get a chance to work for these super cool companies that let you work from anywhere.
You get to travel
Not only do these jobs allow you to travel without taking time off (and stay where you’ve gone for as long as you like) they also encourage team traveling and offer employee retreats to get to know your coworkers better. A great example of this is practiced by the startup Buffer, who recently visited Iceland as a team and just voted for their next retreat spot. Hint: it’s Hawaii.
Choose to surround yourself with a healthy, vibrant work environment (whatever that may be for you!)
Working from anywhere doesn’t mean you’re stuck in your home office waiting for the mailman so you get to see a human being for the day. You can seriously work from anywhere, so you’ll get creative on the spaces you could work from when you have a location independent job. It could be your favorite local coffee shop, a hip co-working space in your city or in one of the best cities in the world for coworking, or just your own home office.
Flexibility
You will likely have flexibility over your work hours, especially if you have one of these Make Your Own Schedule jobs. Never miss your kids’ soccer game or dance recital again. Brother getting married back home? No need to request the entire week off. Your work goes with you and changes the game and the way people think about and use their PTO. Some jobs have set hours, and some don’t. But because a lot of remote companies have employees in different time-zones across the globe, they let you decide when you put in work…and trust me, there’s a lot of really good reasons Make Your Own Schedule Jobs rock.
Live and work from anywhere in the world
This is by far, hands down, the biggest perk to work from anywhere jobs. From accommodating digital nomads who have yearned to travel and never had the time off work to do so to stay-at-home parents who want to work close to their children, working from anywhere seems like a dream come true to many people.AND, it’s not even that unrealistic anymore.
